What to do when you don't know what to do |

There is a story in the Bible in the second book of chronicles chapter 20 of a King, Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. He gets a report of a very large army advancing against his kingdom and they are only a few hours away. Very alarmed he resolves to fast and pray and seek God. He then prays a prayer to the God who is above all, who is sovereign and who is faithful to all his promises. At the end of the prayer he simply says in the presence of all the people and the leaders, a large crowd, "we don't know what to do but our eyes are on you" - and then they just stand there, waiting, listening, and you an see the little children asking their parents what's going on, being hushed. You can almost feel the tension in the air and the growing uncertainty. Then suddenly one of the men, from the priestly family, is filled with God's spirit and starts to speak out that the battle will be the Lords, they won't have to fight but that they must march out and face the army that is coming. So they set out and as they do they appoint the worshippers and singers to go ahead of the army singing "The Lord is good and His love endures forever" As they begin to sing God sets ambushes against the enemy army and they all destroy each other! I have emphasized a few words I feel we need to hear from God at this time. First of all there didn't seem to be a reason for the attack, it was unprovoked, and the bible doesn't give us a reason. Throughout our lives there will be things happening that we won't know why they happened. Sometimes we do, and sometimes we are reaping what we sow, but other times things just happen and God doesn't say why... The King's response is amazing though, he RESOLVES to fast and pray. That means he humbles himself before God, and then he empties himself (fasts) so that they can hear God. Our resolve is what counts, and our humility before God is what will make us know him. Then there is the silence and the waiting. I always have to learn this lesson, the silence and the waiting. We love to get busy, to get working things out. But this situation was impossible! There was no working things out. And there are usually two options left, get angry or wait in humility before God. You either get angry , or you wait for God in humility.....
The king and the people wait. - and then the prophet speaks... Deliverance is promised and detail is given of the battle. God will give details and deliverance, how faithful and precise God is, but we need to learn to listen, to wait. In these days we need more than ever to listen, to wait and listen to the prophetic voice of deliverance and encouragement. The times ahead will require a people who fear God enough not to move until He speaks. A mature people who know what God has done in the past, who know who God REALLY is. Storms will come and battles will come. This one was unprovoked and for no reason and the king responded in humility and courage before his people and his God.
The story ends with the worshippers and singers singing Gods praise as they march out in front of the army "The Lord is good and His love endures forever" As they begin to sing God sends a confusion and panic into the enemy armies and they all slaughter each other. Our victory is always going to be in humility, praying ,fasting and then facing the issue with worship and courage.
