Civil War in Sri Lanka Escalates!

The need for aid in the north of Sri Lanka increases as the "final push" in the conflict continues, killing more innocent civilians. The call from the west for a cease fire has been rejected by the Sri Lankan government as thousands of people flock into so called "camps" controlled by them. Tens of thousands are still trapped in the remaining stretch of rebel territory.

We have people on the ground in the affected areas ready to use all that is sent to them, ready to turn the situation around for as many as we can help. Please consider our brothers and sister as they seek refuge from the shelling.

In February we wrote to inform you of the impending humanitarian crisis. It is now upon us and we need to act. With your help we can reach people that ordinarily would get missed out. This is because of our partners that are living in the areas affected by the war, not in the "Safe Zones".

Funds from our previous appeal have been gratefully received and have been put to good used in some of the most devastated communities. We now need more, as we face a situation that we all had hoped could be avoided.

Please consider how much of an impact you want to make. A little does go along way in Sri Lanka, but a lot goes even further!

Faithfully

Simon Hannington

Exerpt of a Report from Calvary Church, Jaffna

"Here, we bring your kind prayer consideration about our people, those who are being killed daily in the north of Sri Lanka, particularly in Wanni and Jaffna, due to civil war for 30 year's and this peak time of war. More that 30,000 young people have died because of this war without any justice, and it's continuing to rise. More than 175,000 civilians have died because of 30 years of war and it is increasing now. The war have affected the balance of the community, it has created unwanted groups in the community such as young widows, orphaned children, poverty, prostitution, it continues without anyone stopping it. These are all a result of Sri Lankan Government and split Tamil Groups fighting.

Recently, in our neighboring district called Wanni, there have been more than 8500 people killed and more than 20000 people have been seriously injured by the military shelling. Aerial attacks and cross firing of LTTE. While I am writing this message as our people are dying in Wanni.

Lately, children and young men have died due to hunger. There is no food supply, water and medicines, these essential items have been restricting by the government. It's a very dangerous operation against human lives.

Around 120,000 thousand people have come to the cleared area and relocated in refugee camps. In several places such as Vavuniya, Mannar and Jaffna, The people are living without hygiene facilities, food, and education..etc. The Sri Lankan Government has planned to set a common place (Refugee Camp) for 3 years where the people who have retuned from Wanni, but the people are not willing to live under this scheme; they would like to go back their homes. They can't send messages to their relatives; nobody can get in to see them at the camps.

Every day the people are being injured because of shelling and bombing. The injured people are being taken to hospitals in Vavuniya and Jaffna by ship but some times it doesn't make the journey, as a result so many of the most serious patients die. In the hospital, people are facing terrible suffering because they don't have enough doctors and nurses to look after the patients, there isn't sufficient food, bed sheets, milk powders, under-garments, or the money to get these items, even they can not go & get help from their relatives. So they struggle and are under a lot of stress.

At least 6 pastors have been confirmed dead and 2 more pastors have lost their whole family in Wanni. More than 1000 believers are in refugee camps, they have no bible in the camps. The pastors and believers are worshiping in the camps without the usual facilities.

Our church pastors and believers are in Wanni, only some have come to the cleared area but many of them are in Wanni, even till now. We are doing some relief work through our Vavuniya church. The Pastor and his team are visiting the refugee camps and hospitals daily to pray and look after the victims who come in from Wanni. More injured people are coming to the Vavuniya Hospital daily. We are providing some relief to them, such as clean clothes, sanitary goods, non food items and a small amount of money for food.etc, but we haven't enough to continue. TheJaffna church people have helped, through the collections and they pray daily for the safe recovery of the Wanni people.

Please raise your hands to pray for these people and stretch your hands to help the people who are living under such struggles."

Report From the BBC - May 09

The ceasefire declaration by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and its immediate rejection by the government have emphasised the starkness of the situation in which the guerrilla group finds itself, 37 years after first taking up arms for the cause of a Tamil homeland and 26 years after the start of all-out war.

The Tigers' declaration, though perhaps forced by military circumstance, may also have been influenced by the unfolding diplomatic situation.
It came hours after the arrival in Sri Lanka of the UN's Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes.  He says he will press for the government to let a humanitarian team into the small conflict zone to assess the needs of the trapped civilians.
The Tigers' communique said they welcomed the UN's current initiatives on this score. So this organisation, which is outlawed as a terrorist group by many countries, is trying to show some sort of alignment with the calls from the UN and Western countries at this point, in contrast to the Sri Lankan government which is constantly rejecting the chorus of international calls for a halt in its offensive.
